Psychology is a branch of scientific that deals with mental functions and behaviors. This science attempts to understand the cognitive growth, mental functions as well as social behavior of the individuals and communities through applying general principles as well as specific cases with an aim to do the welfare of the society.
Psychology has diverse applications, for instance, it can efficiently contribute in Family Counseling. Counseling services aim to reduce the emotional problems of human beings. Especially, Family Counseling deals with peoples suffering from relational-difficulties, such as, couple disharmony; behavioral problems of children; grief & loss for any dear one’s death; adolescent emotional ups and downs; handling depression, frustration, anxiety; anger management; stress control in post-divorce situations, economic retrenchment, home or job relocation, mid life issues; childhood abuse memories; tensions in extended families; etc.
To provide family counseling the counselors should ensure several facts, such as, maintenance of professional ethics; keeping relevance with the modern clinical innovations as well as professional medical and psychological research; understanding the individual unique requirement of each client; emphasizing on personal emotional status of each individual; having expertise in applying the mutual problem resolving approaches; having knowledge about principles of effective relationships; finally, providing cost-effective and time-efficient service.
While providing family counseling applying physiological techniques, the councilors must remember some core principles, such as, symptoms are connected to the individual’s life & relationships; individuals should be encouraged to build up self-awareness about the reaction of their attitude to others; individuals should know the probable reactions of their unethical or abnormal attitudes; etc.
To better understand the psychology of the clients, their past lives are required to be explored to find out the roots of anxieties or unhappiness. However, the past-events should not be blamed as the reason of symptoms. In this case, the psychologist or therapist should work without being biased to any member of the family while providing family counseling. Moreover, the clients should be encouraged to carry their change efforts in real lives and relationships.
The duration of family counseling sessions depends on the range and depth of emotional and mental problems of the involved couples or family members. Generally, this is not a lengthy approach. The most important thing is to apply new psychological strategies in the counseling sessions.
In family counseling, if the problems are related to the children or teenagers, then they are required to take counseling along with parents or other members of that family involved to the problems. In the cases regarding couple disharmony, it is advised for both member to attain the counseling session. However, only one member can also take counseling, if the other denies coming.
