What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a therapeutic practice that originated in China and entails stimulating particular points in the human body using very minute needles. It is based on the theory that there is chi, the energy that circulates in all living things, and whenever this energy is disturbed or blocked, illness and pain arise. Acupuncturists utilize small, solid, sharp and sterile needles to go through specific passageways (meridians) inside the body wherein chi flows to bring back harmony and good health of the patient.
When is Acupuncture done?

Acupuncture is used to relieve pain and discomfort associated with many diseases and conditions, including:

  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Headaches, including tension headaches and migraines
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Back pain
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Tendonitis
  • Carpel tunnel syndrome
  • Respiratory disorders, such as allergic rhinitis
Are there any risks involved?
Usually, there is no risk, if you have an experienced and certified acupuncture practitioner using sterile needles. Common side effects may include bruising, soreness or minor bleeding where the needles are inserted. Now a day single-use, disposable needles are used, so the risk of infection is minimal.
What can I expect during an Acupuncture?

Your doctor will ask you about your symptoms, behaviors and lifestyle, to decide the type of acupuncture treatment that will be most effective for you. They may closely examine:

  • The parts of your body where you have pain or discomfort
  • The color, shape and coating of your tongue
  • Skin color
  • The rhythm, strength and quality of the pulse in your wrist

This initial evaluation may take up to 30- 60 minutes. Subsequent appointments usually take about 20 to 30 minutes. A treatment plan for a single condition may involve one or two sessions a week. The number of sessions will depend on the condition and its severity. Generally, it’s common to receive 6-8 treatments.

During the procedure:
Acupuncture points are present all over the body. Sometimes the suitable points are situated far away from the area of pain. The practitioner will explain you the general site of the planned treatment and whether you need to change your clothing. You are asked to lie on a table for the treatment, which may involve:

Needle insertion: Small acupuncture needles are inserted at specific points in your body. The needles are very thin, so insertion causes little discomfort. Around 5 to 20 needles can be used in a typical treatment. You may feel a mild pain sensation when a needle reaches the correct depth.

Needle manipulation: Your practitioner may slowly move or twist the needles after placement.

Needle removal: Generally, the needles are left in the place for 10 to 20 minutes while you relax. There is usually no discomfort during needle removal.
